Many JMU student’s lamented the closing of Dave’s Taverna, a popular restaurant located in downtown Harrisonburg. Other Dukes and Harrisonburg residents have also anguished in the lack of southern comfort food available around town. But now both parties can rejoice; Jimmy Madison’s Southern Kitchen and Whiskey Bar has finally opened.

Housed in the old Dave’s location, Jimmy Madison’s represents a welcome addition to the Harrisonburg food scene. It’s menu features some familiar dishes such as the Southern Fried Chicken sandwich and a variety of impressive burgers, but also includes some more unique choices, such as the Low Country Crab Mac. A long list of tempting appetizers, salads, and desserts round out the menu, each option with its own interesting take on southern flavors. JMU students missing the taste of home or craving something new have a lot to digest here.

Students over 21 can also check out Jimmy Madison’s expansive whiskey and beer menus, which feature drinks far classier than some might be used to. This is the kind of bar more suited to patrons seeking bold and intense flavors than the typical dive.

Another exciting aspect of Jimmy Madison’s opening is its plans to host live music events in the future. Blues and americana fans will find some great acts to enjoy as they knock out their Southern Chicken and Waffles in style. This is especially good news in light of the recent closing of much-loved music venue the Blue Nile.

If you’re looking for a date night destination, a comfortable place to take your visiting parents, or if you’re just really hungry, be sure to visit Jimmy Madison’s while you’re here at James Madison.
