The first question my dad continually asked me when I first arrived at JMU was whether I had found the Catholic Campus Ministry. I was merely planning on going to mass each Sunday to check off the box. However, it turned into much more of a commitment, adventure and family than I could have dreamed. I have met my best friends through Catholic Campus Ministry. When freshman year was the loneliest or school became too stressful, there was warmth within CCM that I could come home to.
Catholic Campus Ministry is a student run Catholic presence on campus, whose mission is to form a welcoming community grounded in the celebration of the Eucharist. Transformed by the Real Presence of Jesus, they strive to evangelize the campus and the world around them through prayer and worship, social justice, faith formation and fellowship.
There is a variety of activities that you can attend from a free meal and fellowship on Tasty Tuesdays, music ministry, Knights of Columbus-a catholic brotherhood, FOCUS bible studies, social events, retreats, freshman faith communities- a group to introduce freshman to CCM, and so much more.
Putting aside all of the things that you can do at Catholic Campus Ministry, there is the woman I became through CCM. Through the invitation to grow closer to God through the sacraments, daily mass, adoration, holy friendships and the answers to questions, I am able to put Christ at the center of my life to become the fullest version of myself. CCM prepared a solid foundation for my next chapter as a Catholic woman and has given me a great love of God that I will carry through out my life. As Pedro Arupe, SJ says “What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what gets you out of bed in the mornings, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything”.
CCM can be found at 1052 South Main Street. It is across from the teacher parking lot near converse hall and the Fedex building.
