As much as we love the independence of living parent-free, there is a certain ping of excitement knowing that some familiar faces will be in Harrisonburg this coming weekend for Family Weekend (9/30-10/2). Now we all know how much we love Harrisonburg, but how we do we make our families love it just as much as we do? Whether you’re a freshmen and the extent of your fine dining in Harrisonburg is E-Hall or you’re a seasoned veteran of the downtown scene, there is always something new to showcase to your family. Here is my list of must-sees this family weekend.
The Arboretum: There is no better way to get outside than visiting JMU’s very own Arboretum. Grab a cup of coffee at Cinnamon Bear right next door and take a stroll with the fam. It’s a great opportunity to be outside and talk about how life at JMU has been so far. Also, this weekend the Arboretum is holding their Fall Bulb Sale, which could be a great souvenir from the weekend!
Downtown Harrisonburg: From Clementine to Billy Jacks, Downtown Harrisonburg has endless restaurants and shopping that will make your parents fall in love with the town as much as JMU’s students do. Warning: Family Weekend is one of the busier weekends in Harrisonburg so don’t forget to make reservations beforehand! Visit the Downtown Harrisonburg Website for a full list of Downtown activities!
The JMU home football game: This is an obvious one, but be sure to bring the whole family out to support the Dukes this Saturday against the Blue Hens of Delaware. Visit here for more events surrounding the game.
Sunrise drive on Skyline Drive: the Blue Ridge Mountains make for a stunning backdrop on JMU’s campus. Take a quick drive down Skyline Drive for a gorgeous view and some quality time together with family. Check out the National Park Service’s website for some ideas of places to hike or routes to get to the best views.
