As much as we all love the convenience of the on-campus Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, it’s nice to get off campus and change up your surroundings every once in awhile. You may or may not already know, but Harrisonburg has a variety of shops that not only offer great food and coffee, but make for great study spaces! Here’s a list of hot spots in the ‘burg you should get checked off your coffee bucket list.

The Black Sheep

  • 217 S Liberty St (you can park in the lot across from the train tracks and Ice House)
  • 7am-7pm Monday-Sunday
  • This cafe offers a good variety of coffee and breakfast food; I personally recommend the Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a biscuit. If you’re looking for a new study spot, the Black Sheep also has a good amount of tables, couches and outdoor space to enjoy your coffee while getting some work done!

Shenandoah Joe

  • 64 S Mason St (next to Benny’s under Urban Exchange Apartments)
  • Monday-Friday 7am-8pm, Saturday 8am-8pm, Sunday 8am-5pm
  • This coffee shop is pretty close to campus and has a nice open feel complete with a variety of study spots – tables, nice chairs, and benches!

Court Square Coffee

  • 2 North Main Street
  • 7am-3pm Monday-Friday
  • This “lemonade stand for grownups” as the owner described to me, is a small space meant for those on the go. Court Square is ideal for picking up your coffee on the way to work, class, or studying! There’s even a 15 minute parking spot in front of the shop right on Main Street. Also, be sure to use their 10-drink punch card to get rewarded with a free drink.

Greenberry’s Coffee Co.

  • 400 South High Street (right across from Memorial Hall)
  • 6am-9pm Monday-Friday
  • Greenberry’s is a little more mainstream compared to the other cafes in downtown Harrisonburg, but its convenient location on campus makes it a great spot for students to study in between class, especially those with class in Memorial or at the Art Studio.

Earth and Tea Cafe

  • 120 South Main Street
  • 10am-5pm Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday
  • Earth and Tea Cafe is unique from other coffee spots in the ‘Burg because of their menu which includes a variety of international dishes, as well as tea and coffee. The lounge area is also complete with international decor, funky couches and dimmed lighting to make for a calming atmosphere.

Heritage Bakery and Cafe

  • 212 South Main Street
  • Monday-Saturday 8:30am-5pm
  • Specializing in unique bakery pastries and treats (including colorful macarons), Heritage Bakery is a spot to have nice morning meetings or hang with friends while snacking on something sweet. The cafe also hosts “Sunday Tea” events on specific holiday weekends, which could make for a fun activity with visiting parents or friends on a chilly day!

Using your dining dollars at Dunkin’ and Starbucks is always tempting, but don’t forget that Harrisonburg has a lot to offer when it comes to off-campus coffee! Hopefully this list encourages you to explore the ‘Burg and expand your list of study, hangout, and relaxation spots.
