On January 16th, we celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He changed the way that we thought, he moved us to tears, and tried to put an end to segregation. Needless to say, he is a very influential figure in not only the United States’ history, but the world’s history. On the 16th of January, JMU will be honoring MLK day by marking the day as a holiday and cancelling all classes. Many JMU organizations and The City of Harrisonburg are hosting events around MLK day. The Center for Multicultural Student Services and the MLK Celebration Committee are having many events throughout the week of January 16th, and several of them are also being sponsored by other organizations, such as Esteem Models, NAACP, BSA, and MAD4U. This year the theme of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week is “From Hashtag to Action: Unifying the Dream.”

Monday, January 16

MLK Formal Program: Madison Vision Series

There will be a talk from guest speaker Theodore Shaw in Wilson Hall Auditorium at 6 PM.

Tuesday, January 17

NAACP Breakfast

The JMU chapter of NAACP is hosting a breakfast in honor of Dr. King in Madison Union 256 from 8 AM-10 AM.

Dear Professor, I Wish You Knew: Voices of the Marginalized Students Within the Classroom

Dr. Kara Kavanagh from the College of Education will be facilitating this discussion in Madison Union 256 at 12 PM.

Screening of 13th

There will be a screening the documentary 13th at Grafton Stovall Theatre at 7 PM hosted by the D.E.E.P. Impact Cultural Series.

Wednesday, January 18

Tea Time

This week’s Tea Time will be dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and cohosted by MAD4U. Tea Time will take place in Madison Union 205A at 4 PM.

From Hashtag to Action

In the Madison Union Ballroom at 7 PM, D.E.E.P. Impact Dialogue will be hosting a talk entitled “From Hashtag to Action.”

Thursday, January 19

March and Speak Out

CMSS is hosting a march that will meet at the James Madison Statue near Varner House at 3:50 PM and will end in Madison Union Ballroom where participants will be encouraged then to speak out.

Friday, January 20 

Community Service at Boys and Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County

This will take place at the Simms Center and Stone Spring Elementary at 3 PM to 5 PM.

Student Gala Banquet

There will be a student banquet, called “A New Season,” sponsored by JMU Esteem Models, JMU NAACP, and BSA in Madison Union Ballroom at 7 PM to end Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week.
