JMU announced the artists coming for the Spring concert! Here’s what you need to know about the concert happening on April 13th.

WHAT: 2017 Spring Concert
WHERE: Convocation Center
WHEN: Thursday, April 13th at 8pm
I talked to Center Stage Committee Director, Joanna Rose, to get the full scoop on the process behind choosing Cash Cash for the JMU 2017 Spring Concert.
How does JMU choose the artist?
Each year, JMU’s University Program Board’s Center Stage Committee puts on a Spring concert on campus featuring a top musical artist. When deciding on which artist to book, UPB takes a variety of factors into consideration such as venue size, the price of the artist, and the estimated price of student tickets. For Spring concerts taking place in the JMU Convocation Center, UPB generally has a budget that ranges between $45,000-50,000. After deciding which artists fall in this given budget and are available on the open venue dates, UPB compiles a “Top 5 Artist” list for each music genre. UPB then sends out this list as a survey to the student body via email. After viewing the survey results, UPB discusses what the most popular options are, keeping in mind the momentum of each artist within the industry.
What other artists was JMU considering for the 2017 Spring concert?
Through the student survey, UPB was able to establish that the most popular genre of music among students was Hip-Hop/Rap. However, due to the fact the last four years of Spring concerts consisted of Rap artists, the Center Stage Committee discussed experimenting this year with a new popular genre of music, EDM. Originally, UPB looked into booking rising EDM artist, Galantis, but decided to go a different direction because of budget limitations. If UPB had gone with the Hip-Hop/Rap genre, they were looking into T-Pain, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lil Yachty, all of which were now out of the price range.
What can you expect at the 2017 concert?
Kap Slap will be playing a 30 minute set and Cash Cash will have a set lasting over an hour long. UPB is also doing something different this year and is looking for a student DJ to play during the time between the doors opening and Kap Slap’s set!
