From now until April 5, the Drawing on the Left exhibit will be showing in Duke Hall. Ben Shahn is an artist who was born in Lithuania in 1898 and immigrated to the United States in 1906 with his family. Most of his work was impacted by the historical events occurring at the time he was in New York, such as The Great Depression , the Civil Rights Movement, and World War II. He considered himself a political realist and this is reflected in his artwork with the themes of injustice and immigration heavily apparent. He was all for fighting for human rights and it is showcased in all of his artwork. His artwork focuses on poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and civil rights.

The exhibitΒ includes Ben Shahn’s paintings, drawings, and photographs. Be sure to check it out and see one of the awesome exhibitions that has been brought to us here at JMU!
