The time for overpacked minivans and emotional parents is finally here as the newest members of our JMU family settle into their new home. Orientation is well underway with this week’s events already proving to be a success.
Here are some of the main events taking place during the rest of 1787 Orientation:
Thursday, Aug. 24
10–11:15 a.m. It’s Complicated
Students approach ethical dilemmas and talk about real-world issues through the lens of JMU’s Eight Key Questions.
2–4 p.m. Academic Advising Meeting
Freshman Advisors meet with students to discuss email etiquette, time management, and other useful tips.
9 p.m.-12 a.m. UREC-FEST, University Recreation Center
Dukes can explore what UREC has to offer and partake in numerous activities including swimming, rock-climbing, and basketball. Remember to dress for the occasion in workout attire!
Friday, Aug. 25
10 a.m. Try Intramural Sports, UREC Turf
Students have the chance to learn how to sign up for intramural sports and can play pick-up games such as soccer, kickball, and flag football.
7:30-8:30 p.m. Pep Rally, Bridgeforth Stadium
New students will be introduced to Duke athletes and the Marching Royal Dukes (MRDs). Streamers will fly as Dukes belt out the fight song at Bridgeforth Stadium.
9 p.m. Late Night Breakfast, Festival
University Program Board introduces new Dukes the JMU tradition of a (free!) Late Night Breakfast along with crafts, giveaways, and a DJ.
Saturday, Aug. 26
4:30-6:30 p.m. Block Party in the ’Burg, Downtown Harrisonburg
Head to Downtown Harrisonburg for a community event of delicious food and a vibrant atmosphere of Duke pride.
8-10 p.m. Jimmy’s Mad Jam, Festival Lawn
A capella and dance groups perform, accompanied by sunset views from East Campus.
Sunday, Aug. 27
10 a.m.–1 p.m. Brunch and FROG Finale
FROGs close out their week and say goodbye to their first years.
