Studying abroad is an incredible way to maximize your education.

We all know the Quad is the view of all campus views…but what about Big Ben or Piazzale Michelangelo? There are opportunities waiting for you across the globe! Luckily, JMU offers countless study abroad programs for you to find your perfect fit. The most popular of programs give students the chance to spend an entire semester in a foreign country learning the skills of their majors in an enriched environment.

Being a Semester in London Alum, I can guarantee you that this trip changed my life, but I can’t lie and tell you I wasn’t nervous! Applying for a semester abroad program is a big step in your college career, but it’s one that I will always be thankful for. 

If a three month semester trip doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, don’t worry. There are over 70 programs in countries across the world to choose from that last from a week to a month. This makes it easy for you to dip your toes into the water before diving into a whole semester. Here’s a list of just a few short-term country opportunities:

Here’s a simple breakdown of JMU’s Spring 2018 Semester Abroad programs:


Who? College of Business

When? January 18th – April 24th, 2018

How much? In state – $16,792, Out of state – $24,992

Director? Molly Brown,

During your semester in Antwerp, you will uniquely complete your COB 300 requirement! You will study with students from across the country at the University of Antwerp. Being situated in the middle of Eastern Europe gives you the opportunity to travel quickly between countries with a home base in Belgium.

When? January 17th – April 21st, 2018

How much? In state – $15,792, Out of state – $23,992

Director? Dietrich Maune,

Falling in love with the British culture doesn’t take long! You will live in one of the most bustling cities in the world gives you the opportunity to embrace a whole new culture, all the while sipping on some tea. While traveling the U.K. with your program and the rest of Europe on your time, you will never want to leave!


Who? IDLS and Hospitality

When? January 9th – April 13th, 2018

How much? In state – $15,792, Out of state – $23,992

Director? John Scherpreele,

While studying in the beautiful city of Florence, you won’t be able to resist the culture. From breathtaking landscapes to ancient architecture, Florence is a one of a kind city. You will have the opportunity to travel to so many more amazing Italian cities, too! While experiencing traditional Italian cuisine all throughout the country, I’m not sure American pasta or pizza will ever taste as good again!


Who? Spanish

When? January 11th – April 29th, 2018

How much? In state – $15,792, Out of state – $23,792

Director? Felix Wang,

Salamanca, a city that dates back to the 11th century, gives students the medieval experience of Spanish culture that is hard to match. You will get the unique opportunity to study at the University of Salamanca during the day and dive into the extravagant city at night. Traveling the beautiful country of Spain and becoming even comfortable with the Spanish language will be an experience you couldn’t get anywhere else!

So, why not?

Every last one of JMU’s study abroad programs is its own unique experience. The traveling, friendships, culture and (of course) food, will only leave you itching for more! Studying your major or minor in a foreign country elevates your experience, and because of our amazing university program, the options we have can fit all of our needs as adventurous and intellectual Dukes.

It might be overwhelming starring at those tuition prices, but don’t worry Dukes! Once you have your perfect program figured out, apply to the many scholarships JMU offers to study abroad students. All semester long program students have the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship toward their program fees. The short-term and summer program options also have a $1,000 scholarship award that students can apply for. Along with these scholarships, you can apply to a list of many more, depending on your program! All scholarship applications are also due on November 1st with your program application.
