Have you passed University Park driving on Neff Avenue and your curiosity piqued by the tall wooden structures atop the hill? Wonder no more! The members of The Daily Duke tested out UREC’s TEAM Challenge Course, and now we’re ready to report back.

Even if you’re not quite ready for the high ropes yet, the Challenge Course still offers a ton of entertaining activities without having to leave the ground. We chose the Foundational Teambuilding program, which includes icebreakers and other fun activities, as well as some of the low Challenge course elements.

The Challenge course was a great experience for a number of reasons, but one of the coolest things about it is that the facilitators work really hard to make every program customized for each individual group. We told our lead facilitator, Ana Mae, what we wanted to work on as a team, and she designed an awesome program just for us. We were impressed to notice the other group visiting at the same time as us had completely different activities planned, and they looked like they were having just as much fun as we were.

Our Full Value Contract, complete with what we wanted to accomplish.

At the beginning of our program, we decided together what we wanted to get out of our time at the Challenge Course. Our leaders did a great job explaining that we should try to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones, but also ensured each team member felt comfortable and safe in the environment. After a quick ice breaker and creating our contract, it was time to get started with some activities!

The first activity we did helped the group and leaders get acquainted with each other. We told stories and talked about what was going on in our lives, with an added twist. We learned some interesting things about our leaders, and we also got to know each other a lot better; not only in this game, but throughout the rest of the day’s activities as well.

Our first activity of the day.

The activities that followed were fun, challenging, and absolutely hilarious all at once—saying we had a good time would be an understatement. We appreciated how our leaders related each game back to our day-to-day interactions at Daily Duke headquarters. We gained some new strategies to try out in the workplace, and had a great time doing it.

Throughout the day, we strengthened relationships, learned each other’s individual talents and how we could play off them, and gained more respect and trust for one another. If you’re part of any organization in Harrisonburg, you won’t regret planning a trip to the TEAM Challenge Course!
