As many alumni make their way back to campus for homecoming this weekend, I thought it was a good time to highlight a few special alums…Daily Duke alums, that is! Past members of The Daily Duke team are living in different cities across the country and working at a variety of jobs. Below is a little bit about what they’re up to now, and advice they have for current Dukes!

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part about my job is the amazing people I work with. They teach me something new every day. They have made the transition from being a student to being a professional absolutely seamless. There is always someone around to further explain something or teach me a helpful insight. Learning definitely doesn’t stop after college and my coworkers have become the best teachers.

Any advice to current Dukes?

TAKE IT ALL IN. I know everyone says that, but you don’t totally realize how amazing JMU is until you leave. Walk a little slower, breath a little deeper and enjoy your time at the most amazing university.

Any advice to current Dukes?

My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved after you leave JMU. No matter where you end up, you should definitely join your local alumni chapter. They host some really cool events, which most of the time include free drinks and food! Plus, as soon as you graduate, you’re automatically a member of the GOLD Network (aka, the Graduates Of the Last Decade); all you have to do is activate your membership to get some pretty cool perks. Connecting with recent grads has been one of the best parts about being an alumna.

How did The Daily Duke help get you where you are today?

Although my job is somewhat far from digital marketing or writing, The Daily Duke helped me better appreciate my JMU experience. I was able to find myself and pursue the future of my dreams by surrounding myself with inspiring campus clubs, alumni, and of course, my Daily Duke squad.

Any advice to current Dukes?

Do what YOU like to do and make bold decisions because a greater life begins when you leave your comfort zone.

How did The Daily Duke help get you where you are today?

Writing for The Daily Duke last year prepared me immensely for working full time. I think my biggest takeaway was learning to work well in a team setting. Being able to understand how your strengths complement the larger team’s goals is something that’s important in any job, and it’s definitely a skill I’ve been able to apply within my Communications Design team at work.

What are you most excited about for coming back to JMU at Homecoming?

Everything! I am almost nervous I won’t have enough time to do all the things I’ve been missing in one weekend. I can’t wait to see friends, walk the quad, go to Billy Jacks, the list goes on.

Lives: Woodbridge, VA

Works: As a Managment Consulting Analyst at Accenture

What’s your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part is that my work is constantly changing! Consulting is project-based, which means that your day to day changes pretty frequently. I love to change things up every now and then, so this is the perfect job for me at this point in my life!

How did The Daily Duke help get you where you are today?

The Daily Duke gave me various opportunities to grow and develop my leadership skills. When I wanted to take on something new for the blog, like setting up Google Analytics, my supervisor was very happy to let me take the reins on it. Instances like that helped me get a sense of what it’s like in the real world.

How did The Daily Duke help get you where you are today?

My experience writing and working with social media helped get me where I am today. I work alongside many of the teams that work on digital campaigns for major networks, such as Netflix, HBO, CBS, Universal, Sony and more!

Any advice to current Dukes?

Work towards what you are passionate about. I’ve always heard, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work another day in your life.” Going out into the real world can be scary – but following what you are passionate about in school will help put you on the right path for the adult world.

How did The Daily Duke help get you where you are today?

The Daily Duke helped me get where I am today by helping me rediscover my voice. For many years, I got lost in academic writing. It’s turned my whole career path around– your voice and your style are, inevitably, a representation of your potential.

What are you most excited about for coming back to JMU at Homecoming?

I am so excited to see my friends that are still studying at JMU. I’m also going to get Billy Jacks.

Whether you’re excited about Billy Jacks, friends, or football, The Daily Duke would like to welcome all alumni back to campus this weekend and wish everyone a Happy Homecoming!
