Even though the holidays are over, winter is still in full swing. If you’re on the search for some fun things to do in the ‘Burg (on- and off-campus!) before the semester really kicks into gear, make this blog post your first stop.
If you haven’t yet been snow tubing at Massanutten (like me), this winter is the time to cross it off your bucket list. Grab some friends and be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time—they sell out fast! Massanutten also offers skiing and snowboarding, and ice skating in their 4,250-square-foot outdoor rink.
2. Wintergreen Resort
If you like to ski or snowboard and haven’t been to Wintergreen’s Winter Terrain Park Series, now’s your chance! Throughout the winter season, they host five competition-style events for skiers and snowboarders of all ages.
3. Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides
Be on the lookout for dates to be announced for moonlit carriage rides through the arboretum! (Perfect for Valentine’s Day!) Once dates are released, call ahead to reserve a spot.
4. Valley Lanes Bowling
If you like to stay warm indoors during the colder months, bowling is a fun distraction from schoolwork. Check out Valley Lane’s killer winter rates and plan a tournament with friends! They also offer billiards and karaoke!
5. Putter-A-Round Mini Golf
This indoor mini-golf course is open Tuesdays through Sundays throughout the winter season. To amp up the fun, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, they offer blacklight miniature golfing! The best part about Putter-A-Round is that each month, they donate ten percent of their proceeds to charities around the Shenandoah Valley. Visit their website for hours and more information.
Funky’s is a popular spot for many Dukes looking to unwind and have some good old-fashioned fun with friends. This roller skating rink even offers discounted admission to college students on Fridays!
7. Court Square Theater
Have you seen a movie or performance at Court Square Theater yet? Located in the heart of Downtown Harrisonburg, this beautiful and cozy theater is the perfect place to avoid the winter weather. Check their schedule to see what’s playing, and mark your calendar!
8. Battleship at UREC
Keep an eye out for UREC to announce the date for the 8th Annual Battleship Tournament! This exciting event is one many of us on the Daily Duke team are not-so-patiently waiting for. Who wouldn’t want to jump in a canoe with a team of friends and work together to sink the other groups battling their way around the UREC pool? While you’re waiting for the date to be announced, look over these rules from past years.
9. John C. Wells Planetarium
The JMU planetarium offers free shows on Saturdays at 11am, 1pm, 2:15pm, 3:30pm! If you haven’t been to a show yet, make some room in your weekend schedule to learn all about the starry sky you see above you each night here in the Shenandoah Valley!
10. JMU Basketball Games
There are still plenty of men’s and women’s basketball games this season! Be sure to attend at least one to cheer on the Dukes to victory!
How many of the items on this list have you done in your JMU experience, Dukes?
