Everyone loves a trip to the thrift store. It’s fun and entirely affordable. You’re also helping out a good cause! One of best parts of thrifting is that every trip is different and you never know what you’ll find. But do you know how to thrift to your best advantage? Here’s a short guide to a few of the many thrift stores Harrisonburg has to offer:
Goodwill is most everyone’s go-to for thrifting. We’re lucky to have one so close to campus. Inventory is constantly changing with all of the donations that the establishment receives throughout the week. One great thing about Goodwill is that their prices are consistent, as far as clothing categories go. You can always count on the shirts being $3.79.
Cause: Providing jobs and secondhand items at good prices.
Here’s their website: http://www.goodwillvalleys.com/about/
Pro-Tip: Every week, a different colored tag goes on sale, at 50% off.

Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift Shop is a great stop if you haven’t been before. Their shoe selection is quite impressive.
Cause: Supports patients needing end-of-life care.

Pro-Tip: If you show them your student ID, you get a discount. And you get a punch card that turns into a $10 coupon after 5 separate visits in which you spend $10 or more.

It’s so fun to see what people are able to find in a thrift shop. Which brings me to my next point, artWorks gallery here at JMU is having a show called “Thrift Shop.” Artists have been challenged to create pieces of art that incorporate at least one item from a second hand store! This show will be happening mid to late February.
