Listen up Dukes- there’s a new restaurant in the ‘Burg! Located on Reservoir Street next to J-Petal, JMU students are dying to taste Poke Alakai for themselves. You’ve probably seen these aesthetically pleasing bowls on your Instagram feed or on a friend’s Snapchat story but what exactly is poke?
Poke (pronounced poh-keh) is a native Hawaiian dish that has become a popular trend in recent months. This dish is typically characterized as cubes of raw or slightly cooked fish over a bed of rice, lettuce, and various toppings. The Daily Duke decided to check out Poke Alakai in order to see what all the hype is about.
Believe it or not, Poke Alakai is considered fast food! Although poke is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of “fast food” this just means that customers can quickly order their bowl and take it to go. The ordering style is very similar to Chipotle or Moe’s, where you create your own bowl and quickly select toppings as you go.
Ordering your delicious poke bowl is a simple six step process! The first step is to select a base, for instance sushi rice, brown rice, or fresh romaine lettuce. Next you pick your two proteins! Although poke is traditionally served with raw fish, Poke Alakai will cook your fish upon request. They offer tuna, salmon, shrimp, yellow-tail, tofu, and more!
Next-up, you can select your add-ins, like- cilantro, diced mango, edamame, green onion, or sesame seeds! Step 4- pick a sauce! From Hawaiian classic sauce to sesame ginger or spicy mayo, there is a delicious sauce to meet everyone’s unique taste buds. Step 5- pick your toppings! Cucumbers, spicy crab, seaweed, corn, pickled ginger and wasabi, and edamame are a few of the many options. Lastly, add a little crunch on top — onion flakes or tempura flakes are always delicious.
Overall, the experience at Poke Alakai was excellent! Not only was the food fresh, quick, and delicious but they have options to please even the pickiest eater.
